~ Lakota Art is Perfect ~

I draw to satisfy my different personality dimensions. Without using art as a form of expression, I would find myself lost. Art has opened my eyes, allowing me to create what I thought impossible. Anything goes. Art allows me to build off what has already been presented, take another approach on things, and tailor it to my liking. Art has given me a new pair of glasses; I now see material differently. Average objects become inspiring ideas for future works.

In order for me to draw I must be motivated, truly inspired. Many aspects of my life inspire my quest for artistic endeavors. These include, my time on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, and my fascination for marine life and fishing. These factors in my life also spearhead ideas, and keep them flowing until I create a concept.

In sixth grade my Dad and I traveled to South Dakota, where he set up a Geriatric Clinic, while I volunteered my time. Ever since that first visit to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, I found myself fascinated by the Lakota Sioux people’s artifacts. They seem so perfect and original. It is truly something I have never seen prior to my exposure to this Indian culture.

These are not the cliché dream catchers one can find in any store in the Northwest. Toy tomahawks and play drums, no, at first glance you can tell these were created to the finest degree. The amount of work and symmetry applied is astonishing. They seem to coexist flawlessly with the areas geography and local life. Each artifact is designed using traditional material, and many of these have labor-intensive paint jobs.

I can relate much of the technicality in the Lakota artifacts to my contemporary pictures. Due to this appeal, I have made them one of the centers of my focus for 7 years. Each picture I draw becomes closer and closer to the art of the Lakota culture. I am influenced close to home as well. Newburyport, Massachusetts, is my second home in the spring and early summer. It is here where I developed my interest in marine art. By fishing with an experienced family friend, or just casting off the beach, I have caught many fish.

Before releasing the fish I take a long look at them and study their streamlined bodies and intricate scale patterns. After releasing so many fish, I have committed the scale patterns and species marks to memory. These fish represent art in the finest degree to me. I have taken this way of life and applied it to my artistic creations. Despite sparking ideas, fishing offers me a sanctuary where I can brainstorm and relax.

Being immersed in art gives me the privilege to see things inspirationally. I am eager to try new types of art and transform the world one piece at a time.
