OST LAW ENFORCEMENT GOES DIGITAL

PINE RIDGE RESERVATION – The Oglala Sioux Tribe has updated its online presence by launching a new website where the public can access vital public safety information.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Oglala Sioux Department of Corrections have upgraded their ability to keep the public informed about who is currently incarcerated in its facilities, those with active warrants, and a list of registered sex offenders living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

“It is very important that the public has access to the types of information we have now made available online,” said OST Chief of Police Robert Ecoffey. “It is important for families to know if their loved ones are in jail, but it also enhances our ability to work with the public to keep our communities safe.”

Ecoffey said that OST Public Safety has prioritized the sharing of information with the public and that the new site is part of the effort to involve the community in its work.

The website can be accessed at Oglala-pdsd. zuercherportal.com. Visitors to the page can select from three different tabs. The first lists all the inmates currently in the custody of the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Department of Corrections. At the time this was written there were 162 individuals listed. The second tab contains active warrants. That particular part of the site has yet to be updated. The third tab provides a list of registered sex offenders and lists 139 individuals.

The information on the site belongs to the public, said Ecoffey. And says that the level of transparency it helps to offer the public is important.

Zuercher is the company that has created the software that fuels the site. The Sioux Falls-based company has further applications that allow police officers to instantly transmit and access data from the palm of their hand.

“Opening an app, the law enforcement officer will be able to access and send information,” writes Zuercher. “One tap of a finger alerts dispatch that the officer has arrived on the scene. Another pulls up information a caller has provided to 911. With another tap, the officer can pull up a warrant before a suspect is encountered.”

“Everybody talks about service is important in any industry, but reliability along with that service is important,” said the company’s founder. “We’re part of the process that answers 911. It can’t have bad days. It can’t not work. We have a track record at this point that’s really attractive from a reputation perspective, and that’s a lot of what’s helping us.”
