Pine Ridge Extension Office Hires New Nutrition Assistant

The Pine Ridge Extension Office continues to move forward and fill our open positions within the office. I am happy to announce Donnette Bowman as our new Nutrition Assistant who has hit the ground running since starting her position on Monday November 5. She would like to take this opportunity to introduce herself to the area:

My name is Donnette Bowman, I am an enrolled member who originally comes from the Eagle Nest District area. I live outside of Porcupine and have spent most of my life on the Pine Ridge Reservation. I am a single mother of two sons and I love to cook. I believe it’s important to understand nutrition and make healthy choices, since many of my relatives have diabetes. It is important to me to be able to share my nutritional interests and experiences with the community members of Shannon County. My position covers two nutritional education services for the Shannon County area. EFNEP stands for the Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program, which is a service program established for families with minor children ages nineteen and younger. FNP means Family Nutrition Program which supports nutritional education for any low income families. These two nutritional programs are a federal/state partnership that assists with nutrition education for the improved health of limited resource families. The programs provide nutrition education to low income families within their communities and is delivered using a learner-centered approach. Program participants will come away with increased knowledge, enhanced skills and abilities as well as improved conditions related to health, nutrition and wellness. My goal is to share healthy nutritional information with all community members.so we may all live healthy lives.

Look for Donnette to be out in the communities working with a number of different programs and visit her informational booths that will be on display throughout the month. If you have any questions on her position feel free to give her a call at the office at 455- 1299 or e-mail her at Donnette.Bowman@sdstate.edu

In other Extension News we have opened up and are advertising the 4-H Program Advisor Position for the Pine Ridge Area, a position I previously held before being promoted to the Community Development Associate Position. The job advertisement should be in the Lakota Country Times and Rapid City Journal shortly and look for posters around your communities with job information. For additional information feel free to call the office at 455-1299 or e-mail me at Keith.Ferguson@sdstate.edu
