Tiospa Zina rolls over Marty, Lower Brule clobbers McLaughlin

MARTY/LOWER BRULE – On Friday, Tiospa Zina traveled to Marty for the final game of the regular season, the Wambdi went up 12-0 after one quarter and up 22-6 at the half on their way to a 42-12 win to finish the regular season at 5-0, earning the #1 seed in the upcoming playoffs.

Jayden Fryer, Tiospa Zina’s senior quarterback ran for 56 yards on five carries and a six yard TD run and went 8 of 14 through the air for 124 yards and touchdown throws of eight and 34 yards, both to Michael Smith; Fryer is a University of Minnesota/Morris commit where he’ll play linebacker. Sophomore Osceola Blue Horse II had 58 yards on six carries with a 12 yard TD run while Elijah Kawlzek, another UM/Morris commit had a 12 yard run for a touchdown.

The Wambdi defense was led by sophomore Bruegel Roberts who had five tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery while center Colby Crawford led a strong blocking game.

“We started this spring season with 32 players, we’re down to 28 after some injuries,” said Mike Peters, Tiospa Zina head coach, “we went with a strength-power run game, resurrected the wishbone and really worked on blocking fundamentals this year; we have Omaha Nation in the first round of the playoffs, they have a good passing game, we’re not looking past them, one game at a time.”

Also on Friday, Lower Brule unleashed a powerful running game, going up 28-0 in the first quarter on their way to a 64-14 win over McLaughlin to finish their regular season at 3-2, earning the #3 seed in the playoffs.

Sophomore quarterback Brian LaRoche Jr. led the way with 210 rushing yards and touchdown runs of 40, 60, 25, 6 and 27 yards. MJ Grassrope chipped in 150 yards on the ground with TD runs of 20, 7 and 50 yards. Gavin Thigh had a 35 yard touchdown run as Lower Brule rushed for 518 yards.

“Spring football has been a challenge, we’re competing with basketball, track but we definitely have seen Improvements on offense, it’s come a long way, our defense has been up and down,” said head coach Charlie LaRoche, “we play Winnebago in the semis on Friday, they have good fundamentals, we’ll have to bring our best game.”

In the third game, Winnebago knocked off Omaha Nation 22-14. CEB had a bye.

The All Nation Football Conference playoffs get underway on Friday in Mitchell at the Joe Quintal Fields, at 4:00pm Tiospa Zina plays Omaha Nation and at 7:00pm Winnebago plays Lower Brule. The championship game is set for Thursday, May 27 at 7:00pm at the same field in Mitchell.
